History: Islam Unit Study Guide



1. Study your "Name that Country" Map of the Middle East. (only highlighted ones)
2. Know the three symbols for Islam/Christianity/Judaism (see bottom of sheet with Mid East lyrics)
3. Know #1-3 and 8 of your Mohammed and the Birth of Islam reading guide
4. Define jihad.
5. Know that a "hajj" is a pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca.
6. Memorize the five duties of Islam and know that they are called the "Five Pillars of Islam."
7. Be familiar with Muslim's five major beliefs. (You do not need to memorize word-for-word.)
8. Identify Abu Bekr (One of Mohammed's first converts).
9. Know that the Muslim holy book is called the Koran.
10. Define imam (a Muslim leader who leads prayers in a mosque)
11. Know that there are two main sects of Muslims--Sunnis (majority) and Shiites (minority).
12. Know that the word "Islam" comes from the arabic word for "submission."

**We have reviewed these things in class along the way, but be sure to study over them before class next week.  We will play a review game on Wednesday!**

2. According to pg. 5, what does the study of physics show us?
3. Define energy and mechanics.
4. According to pg. 6, what is a good example of physics behavior? Why?
5. Name the other important physics specialties our book mentions on pg. 7.
6. According to Discovery Zone on pg. 10, who was the first American woman to fly into outer space?  What were her university degrees and from where did she earn them?
7. Define speed.
8. Name the three types of dimensions our book mentions on pg. 14.
9. Define volume.
10. Name the two scales used in measuring temperature (pg. 15)
11. Go over the SI for All? handout. Be able to discuss the answer to #2 on the questions of the handout.
12. Study your notes about measurement (including the chart with centimeter, decimeter, etc.)
13. Using your Who Am I? handout for L. 3, tell the most important information about each physicist. (Ask yourself: "What is the main thing this person is remembered for?"

History (Lessons 1-9) Study Guide

1. Study bold words.
2. Make sure you have an understanding of the main idea of each lesson.
3. Study the 12 locations selected from your map work.
4. Know the names of the three sects of Judaism. (Essenes, Pharisees, Sadducees)
5. Study the reading guide from L. 5 we completed in class.
6. Study over any notes we took in class.
7. Study over the review questions on several pages we answered in class last week.

We will have a review in class on Tuesday, and the test will be Wednesday Thursday.
