Literature 7/8- A small example for your short paper:

In his short story, "The Politician's Child," Tom Randsy tells of a little boy named Charlie who finds the courage to face his fears and compete in a statewide speech competition.  Readers are immediately engaged by the descriptive language Randsy uses to introduce Charlie's hometown of Southaven.

Randsy uses imagery to help the reader see the sights and smell the smells of the little town.  Charlie walks down a sidewalk "bustling with busy shoppers.  The smell of baked bread from the sandwich shop lingers in the air.  A woman rushes past Charlie with six bags in hand, her bright blue high heels clacking along the cement," (qtd. on pg. 138).

Another literary element Randsy uses to entertain his readers is foreshadowing.  The reader is quite certain the politician's child will lose his typed speech on the day of the competition because his mother continually must remind him to put it in his folder.  The constant warnings hint at what is to come.
